Writing is often like driving a truck at night without headlights, losing your way along the road, and spending a decade in a ditch.

It has been much simpler when I worked as a journalist. In those youthful days I was considered by an editor to write a certain story, was permitted a limited time in which to complete it, and, whether or not I was entirely pleased with the results, I was forced to surrender it before the deadline to the editor, who passed it on to the copyreader, after which it went to the printers and that was the end of it...
